Tenqa Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker

Tenqa SP-99 Wireless Portable Bluetooth Speaker Review

Have you noticed how everything’s going wireless these days? Why, I was visiting a geek I do business with from time to time, and it looked like his computer was just sitting on his desk for show. The only wire I saw for anything was the power cord. When I asked him about it, he said everything was wireless. Wow, I guess things have changed while I’ve been off hibernating.

Well, here’s another wireless gadget to throw in your bag; wireless speakers for all your Bluetooth gear. It’s actually pretty cool not having to hook things up, once you get used to it.

Our Review

Tenqa’s SP-99 Bluetooth wireless speaker makes it easy to amplify the sound from your iPhone, iPad touch, Blackberry phone and all those other Bluetooth gadgets we’re getting these days. Even though it has a 3.5 mm audio connection and cable, there’s really no need to use it, unless you’ve got some sort of old-fashioned gadget that’s not Bluetooth compatible.

The compact unit will run off of AC power (from the included adapter) or 4 AA batteries (which of course aren’t included). Although small, with the small speaker sound, for casual listening it’s really not all that bad. There’s even a control panel to allow you to control AVRCP (doesn’t that mean “Association for Vanquishing Rodent Complaint Procedures? Hey, Chief Gopher, you’d better look at this) compliant devices.

For an inexpensive unit, these Bluetooth wireless speakers are really pretty decent. They have a nice, “solid” feel to them, a compact shiny black case, and are easy to carry along with you for those times when you just have to have some tunes. The AVRCP compatible controls are really nice, that is, if you’ve got AVRCP compatible devices. All in all, they’re a great unit to have around. The only thing I’d really complain about is the power switch location, which is on the back for some strange reason… maybe they don’t want us to turn it off; hmmm.

The Look

Sleek, black, with a stainless steel grill to protect the speakers themselves. Overall, it’s not something you’re likely to throw out of your backpack the next morning. By comparison, the AC adapter looks a little clunky, but then, what can you do to make an AC adapter look cool?

The controls are nicely set into the edge of the case, almost as if they were molded there. Looks like they probably wouldn’t get bumped very easily, so you probably won’t have to worry about jumping to the next song mid-chorus.

Setup

Hey, it’s Bluetooth, how much easier can you get? Just turn it on, then tell your whatever to find it. The device does all the work for you. Once it’s “found” all you have to do the next time is turn it on, and make sure Bluetooth is turned on in your device. They’ll find each other.

Sound Quality

Okay, they’re only 2 inch speakers, so you’re not going to fill a concert hall. Like all tiny speakers, there are limitations. You can get good enough sound for casual listening, but if you’re a true audiophile, this Gopher thinks you’ll be disappointed.

Should you buy it?

If you need some way of listening to your tunes on the go, I’d definitely say these Tenqa SP-99 Bluetooth wireless speakers are a winner. Compact, sleek design, battery or AC powered, and best of all, wireless. This is a real winner, and the price isn’t much more than buying speakers with wires that you have to mess with and untangle and have break at the wrong time and all that.

Pros

  • Bluetooth (need I say more)
  • Sleek, compact design – slips into your gear bag or backpack easily, without tearing through the fabric
  • Battery or AC power – great to have the option
  • Controls on the speaker (for AVRCP compatible units)

Cons

  • Wires may be a bit short for some people
  • Awkwardly placed on/off button on the sub
  • The price
