Logitech G500 Gaming Mouse

Logitech G500 Programmable Laser Gaming Mouse Review

Wow, I love this job. Can you believe it? I’m getting paid to play computer games. Haha, this is great. After all, I’ve got to check this Logitech laser gaming mouse out really well, before I can write a review on it. I guess the Chief Gopher’s not all that bad, after all. Neither is this mouse, wow, I really like the control it gives me.

Our Review

As with all things Logitech, this is a one well thought out mouse. The G500 delivers a nice package of options in a mouse that’s rather comfortable to the hand. All the controls on this mouse are easy to get to, even in the heat of battle. Although appearing small, the three button thumb cluster is big enough to do the job, and placed in exactly the right place to make them easy to use.

One of the really nice features about this laser gaming mouse is the on-the-fly adjustable sensitivity. Two small buttons, to the left of the standard left mouse button, allow you to decrease your sensitivity for that long sniper shot, or increase it for fast moving through the game map at only the touch of a button. A small LED strip-meter, located right in the gap between your thumb and index finger, gives you a quick indication to your current sensitivity setting. Man, where was this thing back when I was playing pong?

Another great feature is the dual-mode scroll wheel. If you’re like me, using the same mouse for both work and play, it’s great to be able to switch between the accuracy of a click through scroll wheel for selecting weapons on the run, or freewheel the scroll wheel when looking for that pertinent bit of data on a long web page.

Like a heavier mouse for better control? No problem, the G500 laser gaming mouse lets you add up to 27 grams of included weights, to customize the feel for your hand.

The Look

Logitech didn’t waste time and money putting fancy graphics into this laser gaming mouse. It’s rather simple looking, black and grey. The sides, like many Logitech mice, are black rubber coated for a sure grip in the heat of battle. The most outstanding feature is the LED strip meter for sensitivity, which stands out clearly in red.

Setup

Basic setup is a snap; just plug it in and let plug-n-play take over. Customizing the buttons for your particular gaming style may take a little longer, and even longer to get used to that custom setup; but it’s definitely worth it. The onboard memory means that you don’t have to worry about setting it up when you go to play on another system. All your character information and settings are right there on your mouse, ready to go along with you. You’ve got to install Logitech’s SetPoint® software for the initial profile setup, but after that, it’s smooth scrolling.

Sensitivity and Control

This is where this mouse has got everyone else beat. Can you believe 5700 DPI? I though 4000 DPI was a lot, but we’re talking a whole 42.5% more sensitivity with this laser gaming mouse! Couple that with a precision gaming laser and you’d better be ready for some really fast action. Don’t forget the on-the-fly sensitivity changes either. Talk about control, this baby’s got it.

Should you buy it?

If you haven’t guessed it already, I’m sold on this laser gaming mouse. I wonder if I can get the Chief Gopher to let me keep it. Hmm, maybe I can come up with some way to tell him it’ll make me work more efficiently. Nah, that won’t work. Hey, if you have a change to buy the G500, I’d say you’ll be as enthusiastic about this one as I am.

Pros

  • 5700 dpi sensitivity
  • On-the-fly sensitivity control, with a LED ribbon meter
  • 10, count ‘em 10 programmable buttons

Cons

  • Ummm, well, uh, what cons?
