JBL Creature II Speaker System
JBL Creature II 3-Piece Powered Speaker System Review
Gopher: What is it?
Zach: Does it eat gophers?
Gopher: I don’t think so.
Greg: Looks pretty dangerous to me. You touch it first.
Gopher: Me, why me?
Greg & Zach together: Because you’re dad!
Okay, so I touched it, and you know what? It didn’t bite, instead music started coming out of it. Then I realized that these crazy looking creatures weren’t aliens which had come to invade us, they’re JBL desktop speakers.

I’ve got to say, JBL really named this one right. It looks like it’s ready to jump right off your desktop and gobble up all the little gophers. This is a really unique 2.1 speaker system in that the woofer is designed to sit on your desktop, not the floor. Now, I don’t know about you, but I prefer keeping my dog on the floor, not the desk… oh, sorry, wrong type of woofer. Anyway, all three speakers in this system are designed to sit on your desk.
This is a powered speaker system, with a 25 watt amplifier built in. You want volume? You’ve got volume with the creature. The “eyes” on the woofer are actually base and treble controls. The woofer is touch sensitive for increasing, decreasing and muting sound. It even remembers what volume you had it set for, so that it can return back to that level after your wife (or mom) yells at you to turn it down.
If you’re looking for cool… well, it’d be really hard to beat these JBL desktop speakers. Not only cool in looks, but cool in function as well. I mean, touch sensitive is the way to go. The only thing that could be better is if it could read your mind.
For the price, the sound is pretty good too. The treble is a little tinny, probably from the plastic case, but the mid range and bass comes out really nice. JBL has dropped the price on these too, from $129.00 to $99.00.
You’re probably too young to get it, but we used to say things were “far out.” Well, these speakers are so far out that I don’t even think Captain Kirk would have had them on the Starship Enterprise; or Cpt. Lee “Apollo” Adama on Battlestar Galactica to cover both sides of the coin. Anyone who sees these sitting on your desk is going to know you’ve got the coolest speaker system around.
Nothing to it, you don’t even have to crawl around on the floor if you don’t want to (although I did). Just plug it in to power and into your computer. Nowadays, lots of computers have audio jacks on the front, so you can just plug-er-in right thar if you want. Personally, even though it’s a bit of a hassle for an Old Gopher like me, I like to hide the cords by plugging in to the back of my box.
Really good, if you don’t mind a little tininess on the top end. Not only that, but you’ve got bass and treble controls right on the woofer, easy to get to. Not many 2.1 speaker systems give you that option. Bass and midrange are really nice, and if you back off the treble a bit, you probably won’t notice the tin. Granted, it’s not a 5.2 system, but it’s not priced like one either.
Should you buy it?
If you want something that says “wow” to your friends, these JBL desktop speakers will definitely do it. There’s a lot of “unique” looking speakers out there, but they don’t look like they just climbed out of a space ship. Not only does it loos great, but the controls on this one are better than most; touch control for volume and mute, built in treble and bass, you don’t usually find all that on a speaker system for this price. Good sound, great looks, good controls; I’d call it a definite winner.
- Really cool look (I wonder if the next version will dance?)
- Treble and bass controls at your fingertips
- Touch control for volume and mute
- Remembers your volume setting for un-mute
- Really good midrange and bass sound
- A bit tinny in the treble
- Might scare your dog
